MUSIC Q&A SEGMENT

Country Music Explosion:How old were you when you knew you wanted to be a singer?at the time did you know what Genre you wanted to sing ?

Paul Justin:I was 13 when I really started to sing in a band.I was actually just picked to be the singer because no one else wanted to.I realized I wanted to sing country after my divorce……
====================================================
Country Music Explosion:Tell us a bit about the selection process you go through when doing a gig?or in the studio?How do you decide which song to perform or record first?

Paul Justin:I think that it all depends on the gig that youre doing and what the fans expect from you.It dictates how we make a set.As far as the studio goes,we usually talk about which ones we want to do and go for it.Once we track three or so,then we sit down and look at what we want to do next.Sometimes when you’re writing for a record,songs come up at the last minute,and you just know need to be on the record.
====================================================
Country Music Explosion:Music-sharing sites and blogs as well as a flood of releases in general are presenting both listeners and artists with challenging questions. What's your view on the value of music today?

Paul Justin:I think there’s a lot of great music out there today.I appreciate songwriters and artists that sell what they know and have lived or experienced.I personally like songs that have a little more meat than sitting on a tailgate with a pretty girl drinking a beer.Those things sell like hot cakes but I think the industry can over-use things just to make money.I suppose if you’re not worried about being a writer and expressing what you have to express then you’re ok with doing whatever makes money.I think there has to be a little more balance between “bubble-gum-hick-hop” country and things that go a little deeper.
====================================================
Country Music Explosion:Which instruments do you play?

Paul Justin:I play acoustic and electric guitar.I’ve dabbled a little with mandolin and dobro.
====================================================
Country Music Explosion:What was the first tune(s) you learned?

Paul Justin:Last Kiss by Frank J. Wilson & The Caviliers.
====================================================
Country Music Explosion:Is your family musical?

Paul Justin:My father did musical theater and choir when he was young and then toured the country for the better part of 10 years playing lounges and bars,he currently is doing a tribute show to Neil Diamond (he sounds just like him). My mother was also a singer and played flute.It pretty much permeates my family.We’re all in entertainment in one way or another.
====================================================
Country Music Explosion:Which famous musicians do you admire? Why?

Paul Justin:McCartney/Lennon,Gordon Lightfoot,George Strait.They are/we’re all amazing talents in their own right. George Strait is as always the master of picking #1 hits.
====================================================
Country Music Explosion:Which famous musicians have you learned from?

Paul Justin:Humm.The same ones!McCartney,Lennon,and Lightfoot we’re amazing songwriters and George Strait is an amazing singer.
====================================================
Country Music Explosion:What are your fondest musical memories? In your house? In your neighborhood or town?

Paul Justin:My favorite musical memories are the times that I got to play with my dad.It’s pretty cool…

====================================================

====================================================
Country Music Explosion:Have you been in competitions? Any prizes?

Paul Justin:Most of the time we just stride over them and forget about them. Other times we have to have a little bit of a fight. LOL
====================================================
Country Music Explosion:Do you get nervous before a performance or a competition?

Paul Justin:I don’t really get nervous,if I feel nervous,I just remind myself how many times I’ve done this and it calms me down.Justin Foutz gets nervous and has on several occasions gotten sick just before we play.
====================================================
Country Music Explosion:What advice would you give to beginners who are nervous?

Paul Justin:Get good at what you can do and have confidence in that.You will never please everyone,so don’t worry about someone saying you stink.For everyone that says you stink, there’s plently more that will like you.
====================================================
Country Music Explosion:Do you attend sessions? What makes a good session?

Paul Justin:I’ve attended and been part of numerous recording and writing sessions.What makes them good is when you come out of them with something you’re proud of.

Paul Justin:We practice serveral times a week.Usually 3-4 hours a day.
====================================================

Paul Justin:I practice things that I don’t know very well in an effort to keep myself learning new style and technique.
====================================================
Country Music Explosion:How do you balance your music with other obligations - friends,family, job?

Paul Justin:It’s difficult.You have to have people around you that get what you’re trying to accomplish and are willing to stand beside you while you’re working on it.It’s also difficult because you are always having to make an extra effort to make sure you’re giving your family enough attention as well.
====================================================
Country Music Explosion:Are you currently looking to be signed to a label?If your signed,can you give us a little insight on how you see the way things are done?is it like a big family?

Paul Justin:We are not currently on a label,but of course would like access to the resources a label can provide.
====================================================
Country Music Explosion:Do you have any new releases coming out soon?if so,what is the name of the song,Album and is it available now for pre-order?

Paul Justin:We are working on new music.We are nearing completion writing for the record and hope to have something available soon.

====================================================
Country Music Explosion:Have you released any albums,cd's..if so can you tell us about them and the process you did to complete it(length of time,favorite song)

Paul Justin:We have released our EP about a year ago.We recorded songs over a 4 month period then mixed and mastered them with Marc DeSisto.They’re all our favorites of course.That’s why we recorded them.

====================================================
Country Music Explosion:When it comes to your music,Do you have one that You're most proud of?If so what is the name of it?

Paul Justin:Saying you’re more proud of one song than another would be like saying you have a favorite child. We love all our songs.
====================================================
Country Music Explosion:Can you tell us if there is a story behind the song?

Paul Justin:Every one of our songs has a story behind it."Sixteen" is about growing up in a small town,"Enjoy the Rain"is about letting go of the things you can’t control,"Sunrise"is about getting home to your girl after a long week of gigs.
====================================================
Country Music Explosion:Which of your song's do you feel most people can relate to?Can you tell us the story behind the song

Paul Justin:It’s hard to say that most people relate to a particular song. There are a couple that really stand out to people,Baby I and Just Because You Love You are probably to most popular, but now by much.

Paul Justin:Sixteen – Growing up in a small town
Sunrise – Getting home to your girl after a long week of gigs
Enjoy The Rain – Letting go of the things you can’t contril
Baby I – Being in love with you someone but now wanting to say it just yet. “Baby I ..Love you”
California – We all moved to California from another state.
Guitar With a Missing String – A love song that compares love to music.
Coupe De Ville – A rebel song about a guy who always seems to get mixed up with the wrong girl.
====================================================
Country Music Explosion:What image do you think your music conveys?

Paul Justin:We’re a group of small town guys with a different way of saying things.
====================================================
Country Music Explosion:Where have you performed? What are your favorite and least favorite venues?

Paul Justin:We’ve opened for Dustin Lynch,Eric Paslay,Kevin Fowler,Cody and The Departed,and soon Colt Ford.These types of shows are always our favorites!Our least favorite venues are the ones that are a little slow and there’s not much of a crowd to interact with.

SONGWRITING Q&A SEGMENT

Country Music Explosion:Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs? Do you think these topics will change over time?

Paul Justin:Justin Foutz and I do the bulk of the writing in the band.Topics change all the time.Songwriting is about finding something to talk about in a way that others haven’t done a thousand times before.Ideas come from everyday life and that’s the best way to write.
====================================================
Country Music Explosion:How would you describe and rate the music scene of the city/state you are currently living in and how important is it in terms of what you're actually writing about?

Paul Justin:The music scene in Southern California is a bit rough for original artists.We do some cover gigs to make money and try to do as many original music shows as we can.I think we’re certainly getting through to people with our songs.
====================================================
Country Music Explosion:What are your main impulses to write music?

Paul Justin:The first thing is that we just have a desire to write great songs.A lot of times we schedule writing sessions and just write.It’s not always a good song but it keeps the wheel turning for the next one.
===========================================================
Country Music Explosion:What do you personally consider to be the incisive moments and pieces in your songwriting and/or career?

Paul Justin:We don’t necessarily have one yet.I think our first charted single will be pretty huge for us!
====================================================
Country Music Explosion:When it comes to song writing, what are your criteria for quality? What are currently your main challenges and ambitions as a writer?

Paul Justin:Songwriting is about having good hook lines, good lyrics and good music to back it all up. Our challenges lately have been just coming up with time to write!
====================================================
Country Music Explosion:What do you usually start with when working on a new Music?

Paul Justin:It varies. Sometimes we have a melody line or a guitar riff. Sometimes we just sit down and start playing chords….it’s not very scientific.
====================================================
Country Music Explosion:Tell us a bit about the selection process for deciding on what to write about,please. What sources will you draw from for research purposes and how much time goes into research, information gathering and fact-checking in general?

Paul Justin:The decision really comes down to the moment we sit down to start writing. The most recent song we wrote called American Sweetheart started with a chord progression that I liked and a general idea of the mood I wanted to write a song in.Justin and I started writing and the hook like “American Sweetheart” just came as we went through the process.It turned out pretty dang cool.Most of the time we don’t have to do a lot of research because we’re just singing about what we already know about.
====================================================
Country Music Explosion:How do you see the role of a song writer in the creative process? Should it amplify public taste, distinguish the good from the bad, inform, promote artists, or, “illuminate, educate and entertain” fans? Do you feel that, as part of your work, music needs to be explained or should it retain its “inexplicable nature”?

Paul Justin:Music and in particular songs,are outlets for a writers creative process.I think great songwriters don’t think that their song is about to change to world or touch or move someone.They’re only thinking about how they feel at that particular moment.I have always felt that music is something very personal and should never actually be explained to someone.It never ceases to amaze me how differently people can take the same song.We all have our own set of experiences that we see the world through and we should all be entitled to think and feel what we want to.
====================================================
Country Music Explosion:In which way does writing and reading about music change the way it is perceived by the public?

Paul Justin:I think when people read an interesting article about a band or an artist,they’re most likely at least to listen to a couple of songs.If they like it they’ll tell more people and if they hate it they’ll tell twice as many. LOL
====================================================
Country Music Explosion:Whom do you feel your obligation is to.. other artists or the fans, and how much do you feel is songwriting restricted by external factors?

Paul Justin:As a songwriter I think your obligation is to yourself and to write the best song you can.Then you hope that the fans and other artists like the song as much as you do.The big machine can feel a bit like it’s putting you down or restricting you.The industry is set up to make money and it will do that.If you’re not the hot thing I suppose that could feel like a restriction, but as a writer, you just keep writing, you never know what will happen in this business.
====================================================
Country Music Explosion:song writing has changed considerably over the past century.What,do you feel,could – or should - be new forms and formats for song writing?

Paul Justin:Writing a new song is sometimes like reinventing the wheel. You have to make a better wheel that people want. Every song writer makes their own wheel and brings their own perspective to old melodies and forms.
====================================================
Country Music Explosion:When and why did you start writing songs?

Paul Justin:Justin and I we’re in our early teens.
====================================================
Country Music Explosion:Are you in a band or a solo artist,if your in a band,Answer the below questions

Paul Justin:We rehearse pretty much every week.The schedule changes to accommodate everyone.
====================================================
